The name come from india...means 4 armies..
the game we know,was created in Persia (IRAN )
It came from the plural of check to where it means game of checks, checks came from shak which is a change from shah which means king

Chess comes from check which comes from kish ( persian ) , declaration of a threat in advance ,
mate which comes from persian word ,maat , ( helpless ).
kish maat....shakh maat...check mate.....
shatrange...indian for 4 armies...how chess before persian modification . used to be played with dices.
