I'm confused and new to chess.com My last game says I "lost" but I was never mated and at the end we had the same # of pieces left.

Did you lose by going over a time limit, perhaps?

it was a 30 minute game....I had like 5 minutes remaining and my opponent had like 9 minutes remaining and then it was weird a message popped up saying there was "technical difficulties" with some icon spinning , but in the background i couyld see my opponents time elapsing

In the most recent 5, I saw one loss that was abandoned/disconnected, and 4 losses where he just got checkmated.

If you are playing via a mobile device and you have a spotty connection, you shouldn't be surprised when this happens.

Hi I know the answer to FREE866's problem. What happened is your connection became interupted, that is what the spinning icon means.  It could either be due to a bump in the internet connection or a a disconnection from the website (possibly due to not having adobe flash player upgraded). In the background it will appear that your opponent's time is running out, but since your connection bacame interrupted (and there's wasn't), when they end up making a move the server would aknowledge that they moved. After 2 minutes of disconnection it counts the game as a win for the opponent. This is just as safety measure against people that "ragequit" after losing large amounts of material and are too stuborn and rude to resign. Disconnection doesn't happen often, so hopefully it won't affect you in the future.

AsRainnie is correct with what they say. Your problem happens to me quite frequently. An easy fix is that when you are seeing that there has been a disconnect and your opponents time is ticking down then make your computer refresh another page (e.g. a newspaper article) and your interconnect will usually connect again within seconds and you will see that your opponent has already moved and it is your turn. Annoying, but such is life!

It actually happens quite frequently to me aswell, so I do the exact same thing as argeicide. I either open a new page, or a exit out of chess.com and refresh it, which almost always works for me!

right but if I "exit out of chess.com" wont then the game end?
