Only think I know for sure is the answer is not to study openings and play blitz. 😂
I started playing seriously during the "Fischer mania" in the early 1970s.
Of course... "playing seriously" is a relative term. I advanced from 1100 to 1500 strength or so pretty rapidly, then plateaued for quite a while. OTB tournaments slowly raised my strength to about 1800, then I started teaching chess at local clubs and rapidly gained another 200 points, taking me to around 2000 OTB rating.
Then I stopped playing chess for nearly 30 years. Fairly recently (within the last five years) I started playing online chess, reaching nearly 2200 (although online ratings are by-and-large worthless).
My current 2297 rating is rather silly... I gained 108 points of that in a single game; this one:
