How do I attack more?

Hi!

I have studied a LOT of games and played a LOT of chess to learn to attack more. I study annotated games of Tal, Morphy, etc. specifically to get better at attack my opponents king or weak pawns.

However, it always seems like lecturers choose to show games where one player makes a mistake. Maybe the failed to complete development, or they made a bunch of dark square weaknesses against a bishop, etc. At this point, I've become a pro at recognizing weaknesses in games that have been preselected to demonstrate someone's attacking prowess.

But in my own games, I can never find such weaknesses in my opponent's structure. It ALWAYS feels like they just play out of a book, and then the game just ends in a draw, or someone makes a tactical oversight and loses.

How can I learn to "make something out of nothing"? How can I attack my opponent if I never feel like they are making weaknesses?

1.  Youre moving wayyyyy to fast.

2.  Youre not following opening principles.

3.  Youre hanging material.

4.  Youre missing simple tactics.

You need to work on the basics before tying to learn advanced things,

There's a common misconception among amateurs that attacking is the way to gain an advantage. This is not true at all.

You gain an advantage by maneuver.

Attacking is a way (not the ONLY way, but ONE way) to convert that advantage into a more convenient form.

For instance, after gaining an advantage in space (by maneuver) you might continue to maneuver in order to convert that space advantage into an advantage in time and coordination. THEN you would attack, in order to convert that advantage in development into an advantage in material or mate.

To answer your original question "How can I attack more"... you would do it by learning how to gain an advantage: by maneuver.

Sacrifice your king any chance you get. No one will ever think you a coward or not attacking too much. 🤣
