How do I get better at chess? Right now my rating is around 1400 and I can't seem to become any better. Is there a way for me to improve?

You should start reading chess books if you haven't already. Go buy some or even check a few out of your local library. Play every day if you can. And do some puzzles every day as well (easy, thanx to the daily chess puzzle and tactics trainer).

Improving your play

1) Play in tournaments

2) Analyse your games with your opponents or your coach

3) Solve lots and lots of tactical puzzles. The puzzles on this site are very good.

4) Study chess each day (30 minutes a day is a good start)

Studies have shown that the SINGLE BEST WAY to quickly improve your game is to buy a CHESS PROGRAM. Newcomers have shown the greatest and fastest improvement when using a chess program.

If you were to take 3 people (assuming they are clones) and put one with THE BEST CHESS books money can buy, put one with the BEST GM TEACHER one can hire, and put one with the program CHESSMASTER, after one month of learning, the person who used chessmaster would be a better all around player than the other two. AND THATS A FACT.

Studies have shown that people do not learn well from books (they get bored, cant understand it, have no one to interact with, can't ask questions, etc.) BOOKS ARE THE LAST THING you should invest in.

TEACHERS are very spendy, and as we all know, a great player does not make a great teacher. Ever have a brilliant math teacher who was horrible at trying to teach you mathematics? We all have.

Just a few hours infront of any quality Chess program will put you far ahead of the casual players or bookworms.

A trait of the best book money can buy is that it's entertaining and simple enough for readers to follow. The best teacher would also be someone that can teach extremely well, so those two arguments of yours are completely moot.
