You can probably find some tournaments in Columbia or Atlanta. Chess clubs aren't too common outside of those cities though.

You want to meet more chess players in real life and share the beauty of chess ?

Join a chessclub or play in otb tourneys. Or combine your holiday with otb chess tourney abroad.

Here online you already have 55 friends. Good.

And you also want to get better at chess ?

Start with doing tactic puzzles every day for at least a few months.

Study annotated master games, watch a few GM videos, read chess books, analyze chess games with stronger chess players.

Good luck, have fun ! :)

you have a great avatar

Don't do it; your only 20; save yourself before its too late; think of the children; you'll turn into addict by 23, you'll become an alcoholic, and go insane. I know your a good person, stop this destructive behavior. Its the chess talking, not you. Look what its done to Erik. He doesn't dare show his face in public anymore. I guy I knew played chess so much, he grew another head. Now he plays with himself all the time. You'll get attacked by aliens. You don't understand; there is NO CURE. Don't say I didn't warn you. Chess is a HARD CORE drug. I've seen guys try to go cold turkey, and it ain't pretty. You'll be run out of town, I swear to God. Its starts with a simple e4, and before you know it, your running behind the garage to castle, EVERY CHANCE YOU GET. Think about the jails. Low class riff-raff, "en passing" throught every week end. Back alley tournaments. Putting your chess board in the pawn shop every other week. Your children will leave you hanging, and your wife will leave you for some musician "en passing" through town. The mods will find you in the gutter, and ban you from every reputable chess site on the web. It doesn't stop there; it only gets worst as you get older. Pawns are hard to chew after you lose your teeth. No one will attend your funeral at the old chess players cemmatary. Your headstone will read, "All Things Considered, I'd Rather Be At The Philadelphia Open". Another life up in flames because of this plague that runs amok across this planet. The inhumanity of it all. Your Digusting, you drug addict. Stay away from my kids.

Start by not posting in these public forums, they will eat your life and you won't play chess.

Go to Starbucks set up your chess board and pieces, someone will offer to sit and play chess with you.

I apologize if you didn't get my ironic form of humor, but I get bored at 3 in the morning.  Your 1st post was just so open ended. There's a ton of free videos on the web for starters. There's a ton of books you can buy. Join the U.S.C.F. Get a paid membership here. How do you make chess a serious part of your life??  BY MAKING THE TIME FOR IT. How do you make ANYTHING a serious part of your life, your job, your wife, your car, other hobbies. Your only 20. Life is bigger than you. Play chess, enjoy chess, but don't forget the priorities. Go to college, do some military service. Teach others how to play. Feel free to ask anything in the forums, but this game is much older than you. If you promise to do well in life, than I promise to keep my humor off your threads. ( I do hope Erik sees post 11; its some of my best work).

Just your words let me know that you are obssessed with chess.  Everything else will happen naturally.  The key reason is that your mind will drive you to chess and chess related activities everyday.

Chess is already a serious part of your life!!
