how do people win on time (expired) ?

I was winning then suddenly the opponent wins based on time. how does that work?

The clock is just as important as the moves you make. If you run out of time you lose, it's as simple as that. The only exception is if you run out of time but the opponent does not have sufficient material to checkmate you - then it is a draw.

You were playing a timed game. If you run out of time and your opponent has sufficient mating material left on the board, he wins.

You were ahead in material but low on time. That is not the same as "winning".
