How do you count/calculate in a multiple capture scenario?

One of the neat things I heard was in cases where the number of attackers = the number of defenders, the player whose piece is on the contested square has more force.
A quick and easy rule of thumb for new players I think.
Remember though that just because you have sufficient defenders doesn't mean your opponent can't make some equal trades on that square.
