How do people get their rating over 2000? how come some people spend years playing but never get their rating over 1200?

let me try one more time to show everyone what rarified air you are in as a GM. FIDE has been handing out the GM title since 1950. in the 73 years since then, less than 100 americans have made GM. that is an average of less than 1.4 american GMs per year. 1.4 people per year from a country with a current population of over 330 million!! do all you dreamers still think you are going to be one of them?
