How do you “study” chess?

I’m new to chess so bear with me. I’ve been watching videos and reading articles to try and learn as much as I can. I’m still not great, and not I’m ready to play online until I can perfect my skills. I keep hearing that you need to study chess, however, I’m not exactly sure what this means. Can someone lead me in the right direction?

It's not necessary to perfect your skills before you play casual games online.  A good instructional book for inexperienced players would help it's not enough.  You've go to play if you want to improve.  Play some games online and if you lose all of them, so what?  Play them over afterwards and try to find where you went wrong.  That will help you to avoid making the same mistakes again and again.

Fbloggs; great answer. Teixchess: play unrated games if you are intimidated, but better yet, dive in and play! So what if you lose? There is no better teacher than experience.

I haven't read Logical Chess Move by Move but I would still recommend it because it's considered one of the all-time best beginner's books.  I've read several of Chernev's books and they've all been excellent.

Hi guys, sorry it’s the wrong thread but where do I find players to play I can’t find a group on the app? I am playing a couple of mates I personally know but it’s not enough.
