How do you tell the computer you want to castle?

My first game I moved the King first and it only allowed me to move one place to the right. The next game I moved the rook first and it would not allow me to move the king?

Thank you. Do you move the king first two spaces, either side to castle, if it is legal? By legal, you mean there are no other pieces in between the King and the Rook, and you are not moving through check?

yes. To castle, these conditions must be satisfied:

1. You have not moved the king the entire game.

2. You have not moved the rook (on the side you want to castle) the entire game.

3. There are exactly 0 pieces in between your king and the rook.

4. The king cannot pass through a square that is attacked.

5. Your king is not already in check.

6. Your king cannot end up on a square that is attacked.

If all are true, you should be fine. :)

Good Luck!

Thank you so much to both of you for your replies and advice. What a great site to learn chess.

Note to point 4, The rook can pass through a square that is attacked and the King shouldn't be in check if you want to castle.

Castling can be performed to King or Queenside. In both situations the King moves two spaces (right or left) and the Rook travel two or three squares (depending on which side you want to castle).

Remember, when castling always move the king first.  This is also the correct procedure in over-the-board games.  If you move the rook first, your opponent (if he wants to be really pedantic) could claim that your move is complete as soon as you let go of the rook.

Good luck, and enjoy your chess!

Has anybody else had problems being allowed to castle when using a windows PC? After years of playing on my cell phone, with my first game using the PC the software wouldn`t let me castle to the left or the right (trying to move the King as I would normally on a chess board).

Not sufficient.

7. The rook must be on the same rank as the king. Otherwise, promotion with an e-file promoted rook is possible since the newly promoted rook would not have moved yet.
