How do you to get to 2000+ OTB Rating?

Hi everyone,

I am wondering how I could acheive Expert rating by the end of three months. I currently reached 1800 USCF and I am wondering how I can improve to 2000. Please give me advice ( preffered from experts already but others can post too)?

I played an expert once and asked him the same thing. He pretty much said play often and study more than you play. I think endgame study is probably the best way to improve rating, but it's the most boring in my opinion.

Just keep on playing chess and improve Cool

Here's how you get to 2000. The main thing is to get past 1999.

I was trying to figure out how many years (note: years) it took me to get from 1800 to 2000.  The USCF appears to have lost record of the time period where I broke 1800, I discovered.  I'm 1781 one month and 1830 the next!

I'm trying to get over 1000 otb rating lol

Ask quickly for a detailed diagnosis by a coach. You need to know exactly what you're missing to even remotely hope gain 200 rating points in 3 months...

Also book ~12 OTB tournaments in this period of time.

What is your name, so that we can follow your progress ?

No it is possible to get to 2000 from 1800 in 3 months. The main point is finding out how you lose games that should be drawn or draw wins. If it is mainly tactical shots, then you should just concentrate on finding your opponent's chances beforemaking your move. If it is not having a plan, looking at a few master games in the main positions you play can give you an idea of how to do this.

Pay off your opponents or protest.

Joking aside, boils down to determination and your dedication.

Of course it is possible. But you'll have to study hard. If you have three months, thats approximately 2000 hours, during that time you can study quite a lot.

Many people will break a USCF 1800 rating, despite it being the 90% percentile for active tournament players in the U.S.

Most of these folks will Never break 2000 -- either for reasons of time, talent, or effort.

Why? What happens by the end of three months?

His mum says if he can't get to 2000 after 3 months he needs to stop wasting his life on a game. :P

But more seriously, I'd be very interested to see how well you do in the next 3 months. I'm not qualified to give study advice but I'd imagine finding your weak areas and improving them would be a good way to keep advancing up the rating ladder.

At 1800 otb you should know how to improve your game, you are not a beginner. I am an expert with a rating 2011 USCF and my highest was 2110 USCF. Study a lot tactics and endgame, I am dead serious about this; you might even go higher. Play sound opening, no junk. Study your favorite GM's games with good annotation. You need more time than three months is too short and give yourself one year. Good luck and work hard, you are close enough to reach your goal. Set a reasonable goal, the next six months try to achieve 1900 USCF and afterward try for 2000 USCF.

hi, just study some books about topics you dont know very good. I mean every chess book will help you to improve, you just need to do it and study hard. But to be honest I dont think you will reach much in this short time of three months exspecially when you are already rated 1800. The step to 2000 is very hard and took me very long time.

LOL that is true

Anyways, I have an OTB game that I have just played against a high 1900 USCF player. Could I have some feedback on this game? As all of you said, I need to anylaze my games.
