How does the program choose opponents for you to play against?

Like I was on chess.com and I saw the square thing choosing a player for me to play with, but I wondered, `How does this thing choose these people?“ And so I wanted to know. Hope you guys have an answer.

looks at people currently searching for a game the person closest rated to you is chosen.

The pictures you see are set by the site and are the same every time as far as I know. It's just a searching graphic but they use real photos from members on the site, if that was what you are asking about.
