How easy is it to become a GM?

Btw, what I found so startling is the drop-off of new GM talent. I wonder if the cell-phone age is beginning to take its toll on chess.

I see this thread started in 2016, how much has the OP elo improved since then?

Massively,

When I started this thread my rating was below 1000, I have reached a high  of 1357 earlier this year.  My rating has slipped since, but that's only because I haven't been watching as many Kingscrusher videos.

@VladimirHerceg91, do you do any other training besides watching Kingcrusher videos? Becoming a really good chess player requires more hard work besides sitting down and watching video.

You probably need to study books, analyze your own games and master games and play quality chess for many years to reach that level. And you probably need a coach and to attend lots of tournaments as well

@VladimirHerceg91, let's just say my OTB rating has spiked more than yours in the same period of time so it's not like you're on pace to become a GM

Once you understand this

the path will open before you as chess will be understood as a totality.

Do you remember the explanations he gave for his "system"?

It was like trying to understand the physics on Star Trek

Chessnetwork video would probably the best among big three youtubers(King cursher, Chess Network , Agadmator). Cos Jerry explain positional chess , tactics and analysis. In fact all passive learning has limited values unless you can apply those new ideas in practical play. To do so, get new ideas, practice with rapid/blitz and review in how many games I can practically apply new ideas etc.

But be aware, not new ideas always improve elo rating even if they are practically good, and sometimes new idea even lose elo. (It is practically impossible to test in human elo, but in stockfish patches, only 1/10 new ideas improve elo)

+1 for Chessnetwork. Made the KBN v K ending seem very simple with his clear explanation

It is very easy to become a stupid boring kid, just follow Magnus. Oh wait, it is vice versa.

And Magnus follows me

I'm afraid it will be the Voynich Manuscript of the chess world.
