HOW EASY IS IT TO RAISE YOUR ELO FROM 883 TO 1200?

Any thoughts?

What format? Rapid? Daily? Blitz? Bullet?

You can basically get to 1200 just by NOT blundering away pieces and ALWAYS noticing and capturing any pieces your opponent blunders.

All it requires is improved alertness and situational awareness.

To get higher than that requires a bit of work.

format is classical...how many games will i have to win?

Depends on too many factors.

This website uses Glicko-2 rating formula, which is basically Elo plus lots of bells and whistles. One of the improvements over Elo's system is a new parameter called rating deviation (usually just called rD) which magnifies all rating changes if you haven't played many games in that particular format recently.

I stopped playing for a couple of years, and when I started again my first rated game on the site earned me +102 points... for one game against an equal-rated player! So if your rD is high you can go from 800 to 1200 in a few games. On the other hand, a very low rD might mean yet get +8 instead of +102, in the same situation.

The rating spread also has a magnifying effect. Losing a game to a player rated a couple of hundred points higher will cost you almost nothing, perhaps 2 or 3 points... while beating him would earn you dozens of points.

Going from 800 to 1200 USCF, for example, requires 4 things:

1. Learn opening principles.

2. Learn how to convert basic winning endgames.

3. Practice basic tactical patterns.

4. Thinking about your moves before you make them.

If we're talking blitz - not much, really, it's mainly about time management, not rushing moves unless in time trouble, not trying to find the best move every time (instead of simply playing a reasonable move faster), basic strategy and filling some glaring opening holes, for example developing properly, not trying to find an early mate in the Philidor and knowing what to do in the Stafford gambit, which is both extremely tricky (albeit more or less losing) and extremely over-represented in blitz at this level. Look at my blitz rating progression since the last summer, when I returned to chess after several years and started to play blitz for the first time in my life. After some initial problems with time management I stabilized on ca. 800 and now I'm on 1157, with two bigger leaps in the meantime.

As far as rapid is concerned - I have no idea, it was really long ago.

Everything I learned in chess was from watching Ben Finegold videos on YouTube. So you could start by doing that and he makes funny jokes

I used to talk to my cat while I studied.

It's certainly not difficult however it does take work and effort. It was suggested that you just see the hanging pieces and tactics. which is true but you also need to learn more about the positional side of chess. learn about the pawns, what are weak pawns vs strong pawns, good pieces vs bad pieces. Learn how to drive the position into a way that is favorable. This is something that you will need to improve a lot on to get 1200+ so you might as well start now.
