How else to approach games apart from targeting F2/F7?

In the endgame, your king becomes a fighting piece.  You want your king to be active, supporting passed pawns, attacking the opponents pawns.  A centralized king is a happy king.

Thank you IM Bacon. I'm sure I will learn in time with more reflection and reading but when does the Endgame generally start? How do I know when I am in it?

As far as endgames go?

Keep it simple...start with the basic KP vs. K endings and work your way up from there.

If you dont know how to win or draw this...

Dont try and figure out more complicated endings yet.

Your king should be working what little there is left of your army in the endgame, look for where it can fulfill its duty, for example, defending or attacking pawns, keeping the enemy king away, and so forth. Hopefully that's written in a fairly understandable manner.

Learn King Opposition. It’s a real shame from closing out a win to a draw or worst and even worst; losing.

Zugswang is something you may run into at some point so it’s good learn now.
