I would say that chess is famous enough 
Can we compare the fame of chess to other games/sports? For example, people always say that soccer (football) is the most popular sport in the world. How is that measured? Maybe by the number of tickets bought, or the number of people who play recreationally. Is there another way to measure how many fans there are? And some fans are bigger fans than others.
I would say that where I live most people never even think about chess. But if you mention it to them they know what it is. So, it's famous in the sense that it is known, but (in the US anyway) it's not popular in the sense that many people participate in it.
Chess is popular all around the world.Not so popular like other sports like soccer,tennis,basketball.Chess became much more popular in this times 21.century because of the greatest Bobby Fischer.Thank you Bobby.

I have a recollection of hearing that there is more literature on the game of chess than any other game. I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.
It's already pretty famous.
chess has almost always been known by others, but there arn't as many peaple who play rather then know about it .
But i cant be positive because i don't knoe how they keep track of how famous it is.
is chess just played for fun or is it really taken seriously ? or will it be more famous in the future ? please give me ur comments on this ....
