How Good Are You?

Ever wondered how good you really are at chess? Ever wondered how your skill level differs amongst time controls? Ever wondered if your computer chess score would have any translation to a real over-the-board game?

I usually play on-line chess on here or ICC, but as a thought experiment I decided to put a free playchess account to good use (the thing you can play through the Fritz 12 GUI and Chessbase GUI) and see where I end up after a certain number of games.

I joined Chess.com in June of July of 2010 and have gotten most of my Chess Learnin' from here (and some books I've half-read). So beginning April 30, 2011, I started keeping track of my playchess games. Here's where I ended up:

Slow Chess: 8 Games. 5 Wins. 3 Losses. 1684

Blitz (3m+): 51 Games. 16 Wins. 42 Losses. 1368.

Bullet (1m-2m): 100 Games. 11 Wins. 89 Losses. 1010.

Man, do I ***SUCK*** at 1 minute and 2 minute chess.  I'm TERRIBLE. I do not move that fast, I don't think that fast, I can't see the board that fast, I can't move my mouse that fast, I flag on games where I'm ahead

I imagine this is a "walk before you run" situation, but how disconcerting is that bullet score? I get absoluely pwned. Some of these 2000+ guys have 30 seconds left when I flag!

So, starting tomorrow I am retiring 1-2 minute chess and will try to focus on 15 minute games (about the amount of time I can play before my 17 month old comes in my office demanding that I pull up www.sproutonline.com and let her watch Chica).

Anyone have a similar experience? Anyone have the inverse happen where they are just the lord god of all that is bullet but can't play long to save their lives?!

Blitz (mostly 10 min games): 1192. 149/157/5.

Standard (always 15 min): 1242. 17/16/2.

Bullet: 1090. 0/1/0. Tried it, hated it, never played again.

The people I see with 2000+ bullet ratings are making atrocious moves. Who knows how they would fare in real chess? They're two different games.

Incidentally, my turn-based rating is 1496, 96/90/11.

I cannot play blitz, standard or bullet at all! I find that the older I get the more time I need to play sensible moves. OTB 2hours first 40 moves is fine but anything under that I leave to others. I really respect the GM's who can still play good games in blitz and other fast games.
