how good can a player be without studying chess?

I disagree; not everyone has the logical mindset to reason through a game and find improvements. Some players might not even be asking themselves the "right questions."

What I do agree with you on is that self-analysis of your past games can be a huge help. However, there is a bit of a learning curve with learning how to analyze efficiently. Perhaps some people are naturally more gifted on this learning curve than others, but that doesn't mean many people don't legitimately struggle on their own. If this wasn't true, then chess coaching wouldn't even be a job because all chess players would just know what to do on their own.

If you want to learn how to analyze your own games @Badchesserrr4486999 you might check an old YouTube video of mine which teaches this. The video I'll send is almost an hour long and it was before I got my webcam, but it is still quality information. I'll also include a much shorter video which is more recent in case you want to know more like what my channel is now:

That's fake news. I remember the 1400+ /1500 blitz players gave me a good run for my money back in the day when I was there struggling. The 1400-1600 range isn't that easy to cross

That's definitely true. I was also struggling at that range when I just crossed 1600. It really was hard to get past that stage without memorising pattern, puzzles or tips by titled players.

You really don't need to study openings or much things to get to 2000 on chess.com. It'll take time but you'll get there

@mongemaconha

You say you're lazy. That's your future right there - you'll never get anywhere in chess with that attitude. Better to give up and go do something else. Backgammon, perhaps. Or tiddlywinks.

I was talking about 1800 chess.com which is equal to 1500-1700 FIDE depending on where you stay.

I am 1211 ELO, maybe living in Turkey is affecting my growth...

Elo becomes harder to gain the higher you go. This is because it’s value is based on the player pool. There are millions of 600,700,800,900s. I’ve just hit 1900, and there are only 50,000 people on chess.com above that.

Without studying chess, it’s almost impossible to get a title. It’s also extremely unlikely you’ll hit 2000. The highest I think even conceivably to reach without studying openings, endgames or doing puzzles is maybe 1500. At a push. Honestly I’d be surprised if you hit 1300 without learning an opening at least…

Got to 1000 with no studying. But played the bots, which helped with openings, and lots of puzzles. But puzzles is fun. Only now I feel like I'm ready to study, and need to it to progress further.

Got to 2000 blitz without studying, just years of on and off playing. Studying or watching others play is boring but I sometimes rewatch games to see what works and what doesn’t.

The players like you are the true definition of " fk around and find out" whereas I had to complete 3 books and spent or rather say wasted countless hours watching chess videos on YouTube.

PromisingPawns

Not to mention the 6 years I wasted

jamesstack

If you play chess I don't know why you wouldn't want to study. Besides helping you get better, it deepens your appreciation of the game.

MaetsNori

Studying helps to shorten the learning curve.

The "lazy" approach (just playing without any study or review) actually takes far more effort and time to improve, ironically.

If you want to improve faster, you should strive to learn what you can, in whatever way is most enjoyable to you.
