How good do chess engines play chess?

@mcris: imo is that not a sacrifice but an offer. You can refuse an offer (in chess), but not refuse a sac. It is already done.

Are "getting better results", and "playing better" the same thing ?

Well, first of all, the competition should be fair ; thus human players should get much more time than the computer, which can calculate a million times faster.

BTW, a few years ago, when this ratio was weaker (let's say 100 000), human players were able to get acceptable results while beeing 100 000 times slowlier than the computer, and this means they have a much better insight on the game - and this is what I'd personnaly call "playing better".

Now another point. Recently I've been watching games of the French championship. Computer analysis were given in real time, and I've noticed some strange things.

For instance, the computer says "white are better", and the analysis is given.

Then white play the move given by the computer, and suddendly the computer now concludes "equal". Self contradiction !!
