How good is one's likelihood of becoming a GM?

If you TRULLY feel that your playing against a cheater who does that--disconnect and come back shortly with GOOD moves--- then send in a ticket to staff with your suspicions. But don't send in a ticket on every game you lose to a higher rated player. Your only seeing 1 game. Could be beginners luck. Staff will look at all the games of that opponent. Habits become patterns.

Feufollet

Thanks for the advice Ronald.

But I doubt that I would ever report anyone on a "hunch"...

It would be unfair to the person - especially when a "hunch"  could be just my imagination.

RonaldJosephCote

The  "hunch" is a result of the symptom.  Chess.com addresses the problem. Say you send in a "look at this" note, and 3 weeks later that person is still playing?  Well you were wrong. No big deal. But you may 1 of many who have the same suspicions about player x.

Feufollet

I getcha Ronald.

But it's not important for me enough to want to do that.

It doesn't "upset" me, that someone is using a computer to play.

I just find it curious that they even do that.

I mean what's the point?

So your avatar has a high rating...but it's not your rating, it's the computer you use....

I've met people who lie in everything about themselves to boost their egos - mitomaniacs - that's what they call them.

Just another curious breed among the human population.

I'm in total agreement with you. I've been here for 2 yrs and I wouldn't know if my opponent was cheating.  I've played about 100 games. Won about half.

Feufollet

LuftWaffles- I sure do hope that that isn't a dealbreaker. I've been trying to get my brain powers back...eating right, practicing on my concentration....that's why I'm here on chess.com, in fact.

Feufollet

woodrow, what you say makes perfect sense to me.

RonaldJosephCote

Black Leapard;  are you a veteran?

Feufollet

no, I wish I did wear that honorable title...

I'm nobody really.

RonaldJosephCote

Well your SOMBODY for god's sake. One other person on this site that I know of had a brain injury.  She was asking for something under the Disabilities Act. There's already a member here with the user name, Nobodyreally.

Feufollet

Ah. It must have been a very serious injury for her.

I'm not disabled or anything.

Just not as sharp as I used to be that is all.

RonaldJosephCote

I know exactly what you mean. I'm 58, and I swear it was just yesterday I was 21.      It was last winter. Oh, she was hospitalized and she wanted more vacation time because she didn't have access to a computer in the hospital. It seemed like a reasonable request to me. I would of given it to her.

Feufollet

Yup. Sounds like a reasonable request to me too. Hope she gets it.

I know what you mean. I'm 2 years shy of 50. And boy, time does fly.

Everything seems like it was only yesterday. Even middle school.

i read a book called "outliers" by malcolm gladwell

the author said it takes 10,000 hours of concenttrated study for the brain to master a topic.  so it is just study, time, resources, and playing.

it is a lot work and time.  you have to ask yourself if it is worth it to become a gm.  and look at the opportunity costs too.  for all that time, energy, money, etc. spent to become a GM, is the reward worth it for you?

GMs have difficulty making living from chess.  The difference between a chess GM and a pizza is that a pizza can guarantee to feed a family of four.

Feufollet

10K hours?! That would be like studying chess 10 hours a day for 3.5 years

I am cursed, then, to never master the thing, or anything for that matter...

I keep flitting from one thing to another -- piles of half read books, half-learned languages, esoteric research...

Good thing I wasn't bankig on making a living by playing chess then...Smile

Why did you believe what it says?

rowsweep

Because it is non fiction and all nonfiction books contain knowledge. Bruce lee even said that having greater knowledge of a.topic leads to power. Also having knowledge leads to confidenllce too.

rowsweep

Who says you have to study at 10 hours a day. You could.study 1 hour a day for 33 years and then have a deep understanding of chess. Maybe even be a gm

eh...back to reality - I've got too many irons in the fire and to short a life span now (given my age) to meet any minimal criteria for becoming GM

only thing left then is how long will my love of the game last before I get bored and move on to something else? LOL
