I have beaten this croatian guy in a 3 match game on a life-size board (pieces 50 cm high or something) on some croatian beach when we had to wait for some hours on the bus to bring us back to holland.

He was really good though the guy was like playing chess all day long whole summer long cuz he had nothing else to do, it was a cool game Tongue out

Pastimes are their own reward, for sure, but I guess the related - or even intended - question would get us thinking about whether or not the sorts of skills developed by chess transfer to other aspects of life - particularly, of course, in regards to decision-making.

The argument that it is indeed helpful seems to be implicit in Garry Kasparov's How Life Imitates Chess: Making the Right Moves, from the Board to the Boardroom, and in stuff I've heard Josh Waitzkin say about the game.

I actually find it difficult to believe that chess *wouldn't* generally help people become more thoughtful decision-makers.  I also think, for those who have experience with OTB games by the clock, that chess can cultivate the ability to remain clear-headed under pressure - or at least punish the inability to do so.  That's all good stuff.

Also, when I wear my chess.com t-shirt, I've gotta carry a stick for beating away the ladies.  So there's that too.  Laughing

Helped?

Chess should be a controlled substance.

I guess chess helped me to recover my memory and brain functions since I had a car wreck in 2006 and broke my head, coma amnesia some serious shit, but I recovered almost everything very fast and I guess it can be explained for the fact that I kept playing or trying to play chess?

Chess has helped me to: pay attention to detail, be more observant, be a flexible planner and to be patient.
