any opinion on fritz 20

Fritz 20 could be considered (in my opinion) a more complete product than compared to 19. For example, the personalitys now adhere to time-managment in a more realistic way (in 19 the personalitys moved instantly, which felt artificial for me). You can also now configure a personality to train against. I like the new design for the interface.

Fritz 20 has a new interface, also used in the latest version of ChessBase.

Has 3 more personalities (Hypermodern, Robot - with adjustable attributes and VIP - Morphy, Lasker, Capablanca, Tal, Fischer and Karpov). The way it plays, it seems to be more realistic than Fritz 19.

Also, the engine seems to be more optimized with regard to the CPU usage. I played Fritz 19 on a laptop and the fans were always spinning like crazy. This doesn't happen with Fritz 20.

There are a few ruff edges but probably will be polished in future updates.

I agree, not sure but 20 feels less laggy, could be due to better optimization.

It sucks at personalities

I really like it.

CPU overload and fan noise decreased. Though I did turn down the threads to 1 instead of the 8 available I have on my laptop. Also, their comment on less punishing tactically after a blunder I think is true. On fritz 19 one little misstep and the engine burns you for it. Then you're in a losing position so it's harder to come back even if you're playing at a lower level. Somehow, they mitigated this.

The available personalities are fun. Maybe they will add more and hope they do. They give a customizable robot, but the only issue is you have no idea how to set these values to mimic other great players of the past though they refer you to chess base 18 "style reports" for help with this, (Success, theory, aggressiveness, fighting spirit, Positional, endgame skill, risk, desiccative games). Yet when I look at the style reports from CB18 they don't exactly match the parameters given for the customizable robot in Fritz19 (attack, risk, positional play, open or closed style, willingness to exchange...... each at a -10 to 10 value range). I suppose 3 of the 5 are there but not the other two that I can see. Also, I can't see a way to plug in the value to its equivalent form one to the other.

I don't own CB 18 so I can't be sure there is not a work around, but I may get it. I think the easiest way is for them to add GM personalities in the future with updates (apparently, they use their opening books too making them more accurate). I think Fritz 19 had almost 20 updates. With my short term of playing through the 6 profiles I feel that Lasker is the toughest though it may just be exposing a weakness of my own play that makes him harder rather than he is higher rated than the other 5 (Fischer, Capablanca, Morphy, Tal, Karpov).

If anyone has any ideas how to adjust the robots' parameters in Fritz 20 let me know what you come up with.

Is it worth it to upgrade from Fritz 19 to Fritz 20?

obamedvedi

yes it is .. well, it was a mistake to buy Fritz 19, will never get the money back..
Fritz 20 is better / works

I had a lot of trouble with Fritz 19 loading the Easy Game Engine opening book instead of the Opening Tree by default everytime I ran the program.

Has that been fixed in Fritz 20?

Boris_Passkey

Hi all,

Is it the same price whether you're upgrading from Fritz 19 or not? The only link for a discount for Fritz 19 owners takes me to Chessbase India.

Given my experience with Chessbase business practices, I wouldn't be surprised.

Yes, I have just had confirmation from their sales people, same price for everyone. I bought Fritz 19 less than a year ago, I am deeply disappointed.

So I've been experimenting with the robot variables in Fritz 20.

Creating pretty accurate reproductions of famous players.

Let me know if anyone is interested in more.

Magnus Carlsen. Attack 5, Risk 3, Positional 10, Position 1, Exchanges -1

I believe an opening book can be created to match the easy mode custom players for an even better representation.

Can Fritz 20 play chess960?

UnsungBallade

Do the achievement/collector cards work as intended? Despite appearing in the bot chat, they do not appear on the webpage somehow. I wonder if this is the case for everybody.
