Opponent has only knight and king should be automatic draw

planeden

because technically you could have been mated.  so, it is a lose on time if your opponent could mate you with any sequence of legal moves.  white king on h8, pawn where it is.  black king on f8 or f7 and the black knight on g6 or f7 would be mate.

maixx

but u cant mate with knight and queen only its on chess rules

Herzog1911

White still has a pawn on the board, though. You would need to have black capture the pawn or draw by repitition/move limit.

planeden

you can if there are other pieces on the board.  i just gave you a legal mate with a king and knight.  K v. K and N can't mate.

So I challenge you to a game, you keep a knight and I keep a queen, and you think I can't mate you?

pretty sure the intention was knight and king, not knight and queen.

As PrawnEatsPrawn has shown, a mate is possible from the position.  Thus, it is a draw.  It doesn't matter that White had to step into it to make it happen, all that counts is whether or not a mate is possible.

planeden

a loss for white, not a draw.

maixx

by chess rules its draw if opponent hasn't enough material to mate(knight, 2 knights or bishop)

omnipaul

Player A runs out of time.

Can player B, by any legal sequence of moves, checkmate player A?

Yes - Player B wins on time.

No - Draw.

wow, if it is a draw while the player has enough material to mate, would anyone ever lose?  oh look, mate in three, well, i need to use my remaining 45 minutes to really think this through.  oh, ran out of time...i guess it is a draw.

TeslasLightning

It can't be an automatic draw because of the pawn.  Black could slip up and white could promote the pawn to a queen.  It only becomes a draw when there is no possibility of another result other than a draw.

heinzie

Notice that N vs. Q can never mate but here is one with the R

maixx

didn't know that if i have a pawn there is no draw. don't know who would take a rook or bishop instead of queen thou in this position or who would play to get mated even with rook, but i ques chess rules think we are retards :D and to be honest i cant queen in this position.

planeden

yeah, it's one of those things.  if there is a possible mate, no matter how dumb one has to play, then it is a loss on time.

vowles_23

You should just be happy you got the win! :D

That's all it boils down to.
