How little would you accept to play chess for a living ?

I'd take $50k per year after my expenses were paid ideally, but would try to make it on less...

...I'd never work another day in my life!Smile

Do I just need to play or do I have to work as hard as I possibly can to get better all the time like an actual pro?

If I've just got to play and do however much studying and practicing I want (and I would do some) I'd do it for expenses plus maybe 30K.

If I have to actually work as hard as a pro, I'd call that a pretty high-intensity job.  I'd need a lot more.

Yup, I have exactly the same question.

I didn't think of it that way originally, but no, you'd actually have to try to excel.

Ah, then forget it - wouldn't take the job.  If I wanted to do that then I'd probably actually be trying to...do that.

For you 20K guys, in all seriousness, how far away from getting good enough to make that are you if you quit your job right now and play full time?  That number might not be crazy unrealistic if you think of the many options besides winning big-name tournaments that are out there.  Good article:

Not giving advice, by the way, just noting that if chess is your dream job and 20k is what you're looking to make, it might not be out of reach.

Its not possible to do much more than have a subsistance existance playing chess and it really only the top 50 in the world can even eek out a living at it. When Anand was #3 in the world he is quoted as thinking about giving it up because there's no money in it. Carlson is the first player since Fischer to really make a lot at it and his money is actually from endorsements because he's young, smart, and good looking.

I am glad you showed up to bring all of this out Anna. I find it difficult to give objective opinions about such things. I felt like I couldn't win that argument, no matter what I said or how I said it. If he had said it about Natalia Pogonina ( the worlds highest paid chess player) I would have been inclined to agree. I don't think Magnus is an ugly person, but I don't get the impression he is sought as much for his modeling, as his chess stature...
