How long did it take you to get to an 1800 rating?

I "started" at around 800 when I started using chess.com, I had some past experience to skip over the first stages of learning. I didn't play consistently enough to be confident at any rating until February of last year, when I started taking it more seriously.

I crossed 1800 Blitz roughly 1 year and a month after creating this account, and 1800 Rapid followed a few days later.

It took me a bit less than 4 years (but this is including the time in quarentine)

Rancid-Knight

Took me years and years... Maybe 8? I don't remember exactly.

JESUS_LUVVV_UUU

3-4 years with consistent practice

It takes me anywhere from a week to a month to get to 1800 rapid, but I never stay there long.

Took me 1 year and 1 month to get to 1800 Rapid from scratch (i.e. learning the rules).

It took me 10 years on and off to reach 1800 Blitz on here. I just did it yesterday.

After about a year of playing chess I was 1800 rapid, after about 2 years of playing I reached 1790s blitz and then I fell back to low 1700s and now, after 3 years of playing I have surpassed 1800 blitz. We will see whether I will bounce back to 1700 this time. As of the moment I am writing this comment I am rated 1824 blitz, 1903 rapid on this website.

It took me around a month to reach 1700 rapid, 1750 blitz, and 1800 bullet. Then it took two more years to reach 2150 rapid, 2200 blitz, and 2300 bullet.

A month to reach 1700 lol. You could have just said you were already a strong player when you made your chess.com account.

I never played chess before I joined Chess.com. didn't really know the rules, but I just reached 1,800 and it took me shy of two years (with several long plateaus) but I played alot of games, tens of thousands in different time controls, loads of puzzle rush, read books, watched online videos.

For me the big change was buying courses on Chessable and making sure I am not dead lost after the opening 10 moves. After that, watching alot of speed run videos where you can see GM go through the middle game thought process, changing the position, timely pawn breaks and beneficial trading, and lastly focusing on end games.

I guess it is about enjoying the journey, I love it all, although I have not played classical or otb. Today, I am not overly thinking about ratings, but playing the best move in the position, trying to see tactics and more importantly, being calm and converting.

I started playing back in 2017 when ‘blitz’ was 10 min games. Started at 700ish and got to 1300 after a couple years. Then chess.com switched the 10 min games to ‘rapid’ which was kind of annoying just from a stats perspective. Wish my blitz stats carried over to rapid so I could look at all time trends. Anyway, I’m at a new PR of 1791 now after a couple more years. I’ve done a bunch of puzzles but no lessons really, and I usually review one game a day since I have the free version. If you’re like me and don’t really study, it’s gonna take a while.
