How long did it take you to get to an 1800 rating?

My goal ever since I got into chess has always been to reach 2000. During my 1 1/2 years of playing, I hit 1000 within less than a year and it was an amazing accomplishment. After reaching 1000 I new I still was struggling with my games and understanding and where I focused on openings and understanding them. Yet this got me only so far so I ended up playing more and understanding why moves were good and bad. Eventually, I pushed on the days I was most confident in my skill and reached 1800. Looking to reach 1900 soon, but definitely will need more practice before this will happen.
I would say 2 years probably if you are not going tryhard but are putting in time here and there. Those that say they got to 1800 in 1 month probably used some engine help, not trying to bash them, just being realistic.
For complete beginners? Of course. I did get to 1800 from 800 in like 2-3 months tho. Does that make me a cheater? (I got a fixed rating of 1800 in my main account)

I achieved a USCF rating over 1800 when I was 49. I learned the moves at age 8, but really took up chess when I was 15. I played competitively in high school, played very little in my 20s, came back to the game in graduate school in my early 30s. I played my first USCF rated tournament when I was 36, establishing a rating in the 1400s. I was C Class until I was 46. My peak rating of 1982 was when I was 52. I’m now in my 60s and dropped to 1858 this past weekend, winning three and losing to an underrated high school senior (520 point upset). Since rising above 1800, I’ve fallen below that mark once, four years after reaching my peak.
From total beginner, it will take up to 8 years. Trust me people who claim to be 1800 or worse 2000 in just one year are scam. Except for exceptional talents I saw only one in my very own eyes 2000 online in just one year.

It is possible and easier than you think.
I personally trained with a handful of partners who are now 2000+.
It only takes hard work and a concise plan.

Yea right I have been seeing you here for 15 years. And also @Optimissed. You cannot even do it yourselves. Peace out.

You’re 8 years to 1800 isn’t very impressive.
I was a natural 1500 OTB in my first year of play…

I know not impressive. My point was normal people like me, like you 100 points a year improvement is ok. By the way, 1500 OTB on your first year is not obvious. It seems you have been playing for decades now you should be 2300 online by now.

2000 OTB is my wall, I know because I use to train with expert players and coaches but I walked away from the game many times.
I am in an interim chapter for the moment. I had plans on playing OTB this year again but that’s on pause now.
@Chuck639 Oh good for you that you have coaches. I am self-taught from moving the pieces up to now. I also have plans playing OTB just having a long break it seems I got stressed out doing too much chess. Good luck in your chess journey.

You don’t have to do it alone.
I am sure you can befriend stronger players at the club you play at, although, it does get harder to find them beyond 2000+ rating that will genuinely help out.
My mistake early in my chess journey was being an arrogant and stubborn player.

That sounds completely impossible.
