It depends on how you play chess. Depending on how smart you are, how lazy you are, how consistent you are, and how interested you are in chess. For me, I've been trying about a year to cross 1050 rating and come to 1100 rating so badly! I'm still trying to get to 1100 rating and I will try... I've been training chess OTB in tournaments recently and I hope I will success getting 1100 rating. CONCLUSION: it depends on how many years it takes of how you play chess.
How long does it normally take to reach 1000, 1500, 1700, 2000 (etc)

On this site I got to 2400 in a few months. Overall been playing chess for a few years without studying much.

It depends on if its OTB or online. I reached 1000 on chess.com in 13 days.
13 days after learning chess? That's more than a little bit suspicious.
That's becasue he's a liar.
Check my chess.com account for yourself. I literally reached 1000 elo in 13 days. Saying I'm a liar without any proof is just stupid. You are clearly just jealous.

"Without any proof"? Are you joking? You yourself admitted that you had chess knowledge from earlier, so your 13 days claim was false.
Maybe "liar" is a bit harsh, but it's basically true, so I really can't fault the guy for saying it.

Dunno, but I reached from 400 to 1400 in a single day, 1400 to 1800 in the 2nd day, took 2 more days to reach 2000, and after that it's basically smooth climbing with a deep bump landing me to 2092 but I overcame that too. Happy chessing!

1000 is not that strong. It's clearly possible to reach this level if you're interested by the game, so you watched good content on internet or read books, and got the basic knowledge like opening principles and main tactical patterns. If you did it, it's very nice, and you may become much stronger in few months !
Players with less than 1000 elo clearly don't even know all the basics, and sometimes even struggle to mate with a Queen or with a Rook. There is a difference between creating a chess.com account and really studying the game. So, don't call "liar" peoples who really wanted to progress and who managed to do it quickly.
i have read all the answers here.
this one conveys the most oversight over the process:
"""""""
Time is not a good measure. You would do better identifying the difference between levels.
You could play 1000 games of Blitz and not improve in the slightest; you could spend five hours a week in serious study and gain 300 rating point quite quickly.
I would say that most players can reach 1200 without much effort; 1600 with some effort; 1800 with a great deal of effort; 2000 is beyond the great majority of players (I am talking about ECF not chess.com ratings which are frustratingly meaningless)."

so good! he sees the journey.
many just want to feel good about themselves "i was rating X in time Y"

I had some previous chess knowledge. I knew basic strategy and tactics, but I started taking it seriously for the New Year. I did not start my account as a complete beginner.
