This is a very common question with beginners, especially if they find they are improving quickly, so don't feel too bad if it seems like people are pooh-poohing you query. They are just further along the path than you.
The irony with chess is that as we get better at the game, the more we realize how crap we truly are at it. It's quite depressing really. The higher our rating gets the more in awe we become of those further up the ladder. You're problem at the moment is that you've not climbed enough rungs yet to truly understand how far away GM status is.
The more important thing to do is to find what it is about playing/studying chess that makes it enjoyable to you and focus on that. Focusing on ratings/status will surely end in tears. Remember this is a hobby, not a job, so it should be enjoyable first and foremost.
