how long to become average!?

I’ve seen a lot of posts about how long it takes to become a titled player, but as I am new to chess I would like a rough estimate on how long it would take to become an average chess player (percentile 50 and around 1200 rating). From what I’ve learnt in my 4 months of chess is that nobody who doesn’t practice and study is going to reach the rating of an average chess player (unless they’re very naturally gifted) so how long did it take you guys to reach this rating?
There is a lot of variation from one person to another. It is not uncommon to see comments like this here:
"I get pissed off at how bad I am. I have gotten slightly better over the past couple years. But still suck. 1200 highest rating average."
In addition to variation due to ability, there is also variation in the amount of time one has spent playing chess before taking up rated play. In my case, there is no way to know how long it took me to acquire 1200-level playing ability because it happened during the years before I started playing rated games.
