10 years.

The only 'talent' you need is the willingness to do nothing but chess with the ultimate payoff of being good at a board game no one cares about.  Sound like a good investment of your time?

Over 5 years of long study. Even then you have to have the natural talent for it.

will unnatural talent do?

Great question.

Unnatural talent is probably impossible. Although I think there is a correlation between learning chess during childhood and becoming a GM, talented or not.

apparently it requires great talent to read & understand posts before posting an unanswered question.

The vast majority of even talented players never become GMs. I don't think the average player has any idea of how unbelievably good even a "mere" IM is.

I once played blitz 5min in a pub in Ireland against a 2300. He had had a few pints and I was hoping I could draw a few or at least get some attacking chances. He wiped me off the board many times in a row effortlessly.

Set some realistic goals like 1200 then 1400 then 1600 and then 2000 then expert and so dont be over ambitious
