Random thoughts about active members; if you go to the daily tournament page you will see a large number of tournaments that have little or no entries, some show a start date months ago when they clearly has not started, you can join a tournament which is about to reach its number of players only to discover a day later that the entries have decreased significantly. A large daily tournament (12 players) can easily have 3 or 4 players who never make a single move another 2 or 3 resign before move 10 for no reason. The number of non-competitive games decreases if you advance to the next round. As for challenges or blitz/bullet tournaments they almost always have a full complement of players. But if chess.com is filling individual challenges with bots I certainly do not know how to prove this one way or the other.
