Anatoly Karpov is still alive, as is every world champion after him (Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Carlsen, Ding, and the incumbent Gukesh). That makes seven. However, if you also count the FIDE world champs during the title split (Khalifman, Ponomariov, Kasimdzhanov and Topalov; not including the aforementioned Anand and Kramnik), then there are eleven who are still living.
