The Man Who Sidetracked His Brains by Lord Dunsany
“I knew a case”, said the financier, “of a man with the most brilliant brains, who had finance at his fingertips.
He was a man called Smoggs, utterly unknown of course. And I say of course because he never used his brains; or rather I should say he never made any use of them, which can be quite a different thing. He just sidetracked them, ram them down a siding that went nowhere; and he might have been as big a financier as any of us.
Do you know what he did? Sit down and I’ll tell you. He went and played chess. All the intellect that might gave controlled, well, more than I can tell you, he wasted over a chessboard.
It came gradually at first; he used to play chess with a man during the luncheon hour, when he and I both worked for the same firm. And after a while he began to beat the fellow, which he could never do at first.
Then he joined a chess club, and some kind of fascination seemed to overcome him; something like drink, or more like poetry or music; but, as I was never addicted to any of the three, I can’t say. Anyway it completely got hold of him and he began to lose interest in things.
He became a good player, there was no doubt of that, and he won a good many prizes. And the value of all the prizes he won his his life would have added up to about a hundred dollars. I’ve made a thousand times as much in an hour. And more than once. But that is all he ever got out of playing chess.
Why! That man could have made millions. He did dabble a bit in finance, as I dabbled a bit in chess; in fact we started together in the same firm, as I told you; but we both left our dabblings and went our different ways.
And his led nowhere. He could have done it though; he could have been a financier. They say it’s no harder than chess, though chess leads to nothing. I never saw such brains so wasted.
Well, said the warden, I can’t sit listening to you all day, but I see your point and agree with it. There are men like that. It’s a pity. But there are men just like it.
He locked the financier up for the night, and hurried back to his work.
How many people think that; Chess is just a Total Waste of Time in Life!
Yes.Chess is just one ******* game that wastes your time...analyzing your games,studying tactics,etc.When you look at the time you have put in it, in a yr visa vis your improvement you realize you are just wasting your time...not only that;say you study 2hrs a day then you play 2 hrs a day you realize you are wasting 4 hrs a day on something that is not really helping pay bills or whatever.You are just playing online with people who you don't really know thinking you are making friends.....this is what George Bernard Shaw said about chess;
"Chess is a foolish expedient for making idle people believe they are doing something very clever when they are only wasting their time."

Whether something is enjoyable or not is not a measure of whether it's a waste of time. Whether something is a waste of time or not revolves around the full constellation of things in a person's life and how well their life is working for them, given the time and attention that they're distributing to those things. A dad can love to gamble, and might enjoy the hell out of it, but if he's skipping out on time with his family to do it, or there are real problems in his life that require the time and energy being devoted to gambling, his enjoyment of the activity doesn't change that. A person can waste their time on something, while refusing to acknowledge that they're wasting their time on it.

There is responsibility and there are debts to be paid when we put fun above all else. Fun and enjoyment cannot be the sole arbiter of what we should do. In the same way you cannot seriously advocate that a person should eat pizza and ice cream and junk food every day because it tastes good. The question is not whether chess is a waste of time. It's whether chess being the kind of thing that requires massive time and energy (in order to improve) is a worthwhile investment of time, when that considerable time and energy could be spent doing something that has a greater return on investment. My guess would be that the original asker of the question has spent considerable time and effort to improve at chess, and now wonders whether or not it was all worth it. Whether the opportunity costs in terms of investing that time and energy elsewhere were too high.

Chess is a good entertainment and a good way to do a workout for your brain. Of course if you are doing nothing at all and you just spend the whole day playing useless bullet games then indeed it is a waste of time, but that is not chess's fault, because if you take away the chess from that person, he/she will just find another way to waste time.
Playing a game of chess for 10 minutes is better than watching some garbage in the TV, because with chess you are at least thinking. Then again, if you stop doing important things in your life because of chess, then we can say that yes, indeed it is a waste of time.

Yes, this point is right. I started playing from Nov '20. And am still playing now.
But I need to focus on my upcoming exams rather than playing chess. I am addicted to chess & all day, I play chess rather than studying and now I regret my past acts.

Well Chess is kind a waste of time. Its just a game, it wont make you smarter, its logic doesnt apply in real life. So imagine if you study chess for 10 000 hours. Yes you wil lget better in chess, but thats it. It has no other benefit in your life, you can really invest your studies in much different areas. For me I play chess just to chill as a game as I would play League of LEgends, DOTA 2, etc. But I rather invest time to study languages, reading books, I take programming course. This is stuff that makes you smarter, it will even make you money. But investing time to study chess unfortuanelly it is true, it is waste of time
If a person is spending large chunks of their time and energy playing chess (or anything else) while other more important matters in their life go unaddressed, then yes, you are wasting your time with chess. And whereas tv shows and other similar things that were mentioned will cost you hours or days, a serious commitment to a hobby like chess can span for years, and you will likely be watching shows, movies, etc ON TOP OF playing.
Different activities invoke different costs, and getting into a hobby like chess, which is as wide and as deep as the ocean has natural traps and pitfalls not present in more shallow pastimes. If chess becomes important to a person, they are more likely to commit much larger chunks of their life to improving at it, because by its nature it requires more of you. And whereas watching a tv show has no impact on one's ego, losing/winning getting better at chess can have a more powerful gravity in terms of its level of temptation, particularly in the way that winning and losing can start to become tied up with ego, making it take on a level of importance that cannot be justified.
All pastimes are not the same, and chess falls into a particularly dangerous category because it is an ocean rather than a puddle. If you don't have your life really together and you're sacrificing productive time and "escaping" to chess, you are better off getting involved with an interest that is a "puddle" rather than an ocean.
