Depends on what you bump into.

dokerbohm

i do not  think chess is a total waste of time -- a total waste of time is just waiting idly bye to die -- instead of going out with a bang

Deadmanparty

A majority of people.

Yes it's a waste of time.   Lots of stuff we do is.

Chess is one of the best wastes of time available.

Until we figure out immortality, everything is a waste of time.

Thanks for noticing!   It is indeed quite gratifying to have one's non-chess-related skills recognized from time to time -- and  on a chess site, of all places!  In fact, I'd venture to say that we have voluminous evidence that well-versed humans tend to value verbal virtuosity and vivid verbal inventiveness, even venerating at times such tiny trivial trifles as alliteration.

So, thanks.

P.S.  Also:  vociferous, vermicelli, vestigial, vulva, and verisimilitude.  (- a few of my favorites that I couldn't justify putting in . ... And, yes. That's right. I do have some "standards.")

It's hard to find just the right context for the word "vulva".

"Hard," yes, but not impossible:  "Politicians are so narcissistic.  They think the whole world should revulvaround them!"

Please Note:  The time has come for me to explain the purpose of my recent contributions to this forum.  My recent posts have been carefully designed to constitute a Definitive Rebuttal to the premise on which this forum was founded.  I believe I've proven, once and for all, that "Chess" can't hold a candle to "Forum Comments" when it comes to "Total Waste of Time in Life" Activities.   Thank you for your attention.

Hobbies are technically a "pastime" though whether this time is wasted is a subject to debate. It probably doesn't matter. Waste enough time and then time wastes you.

MatajuroChess

Chess is exactly same type of waste of time like league of legends, sudoku, crossowords puzzle. If you like it, do it, but dont glorify it.

BuckRob2010

maybe your just a waste of time jk jk

He even wrote several articles about chess and its strategies for newspapers and magazines. While he was not considered a top-level player, he was known to have played against some notable opponents and was respected for his knowledge and love of the game." Chatgpt

if you're a casual player, chess is as much as a waste of time as any other way to waste your time. i'd say that if you disagree with this, you probably just really, really hate chess. i can't blame you for that, to be honest.

As long as the person playing finds it fun then I think its not a waste. Pretty much any fun activites can be considered a "waste of time".
