Yes! Oh No,
How many people think that; Chess is just a Total Waste of Time in Life!

Even being the Checker's World Champ is somewhat shameful.
Considering the Game has been solved since 2007 - 16 Years.
Chess is not there yet, in those "pits."

Abstract
The game of checkers has roughly 500 billion billion possible positions (5 × 1020). The task of solving the game, determining the final result in a game with no mistakes made by either player, is daunting. Since 1989, almost continuously, dozens of computers have been working on solving checkers, applying state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques to the proving process. This paper announces that checkers is now solved: Perfect play by both sides leads to a draw. This is the most challenging popular game to be solved to date, roughly one million times as complex as Connect Four. Artificial intelligence technology has been used to generate strong heuristic-based game-playing programs, such as Deep Blue for chess. Solving a game takes this to the next level by replacing the heuristics with perfection.

Interesting article here for everyone that doubt if chess is not a waste of time. Keep lying to yourself or accept reality.

Chess is a phenomenal way to waste time, as is fishing. Few things are more important in this era of late-capitalism than wasting time effectively. Chess serves a vital purpose in the defense of our humanity.
Chess is just too addictive man….especially since most of the time your work won’t pay off unless you REALLY choose not to give up. It really is an all or nothing game

Punctuation save lives.
Let's eat children.
Let's eat, children.
I'll go with keeping the kiddos after school to learn punctuation. Their lives depend upon it.

Of course it can, or maybe it can't. Or maybe playing pokémon can do the same. Nothing really showed any of this claims beside kids who went from doing nothing to doing something (in this case chess) got better testresults because of any possible reason.
In Russia your government plays you, I suppose that is true in the US too, just not as blatantly.
