I've never done it. I've never had it done to me.
In retrospect, I just haven't played much chess.
Being aware of smother mate threats have helped me in numerous games. Actually delivering the classic back rank smother mate? Maybe only a few dozen times.
Smother mates in general though happens more than you think, I just had two at my local club last week! I think some openings/pawn structures are more susceptible to them though. Strangely, I think most of my actual over the board smother mates have occured in endgames where someone is careless with advancing their king, not so much on the backrank.
His was a solo affair, though.

When I played a couple hours of blitz a day every day, I'd have at least one smothered mate a week, often more.
If you aren't just looking for it, but actively trying to set it up, it will happen.

many times but the first time i did it was the best feeling i had 😂 now it feels like not interesting but still it is amazing but i dont hve the same fun i had when i had did it the first time but still it is one of the amazing check mates you do want to have, the better thing is winning , smother mate is rare at my levl but i used to get when i was 1000 -2000 elo , so im not expecting anyone to blunder a smother mate they either sacrifice queen rook or resign but they will not let me to checkmate smother mate lol sooo yes now if i get against high rated then i will be happy

dude I got this mate twice within the span of two weeks, no, not even two weeks, maybe a week!
I think this is the first time I've ever done this smothered mate. Even tho I've solved it a good bunch of times on tactics trainer.
Have you ever even used this in your life sometime?
