How much money have you spent on chess?

I’ve been playing since 2014 and within only two months, I was already good enough to play in tournaments all over the county. While I haven’t won many at all because, well, I haven’t won any at all. The 34,000 dollars for chess tutelage and needless chess accoutrements have been worth every dollar I’ve shelled out and more. I’m a GM but many people don’t know this yet because I’ve laid kind of low if you feel me. I doubt you can feel me, but at any rate, I love blowing money and like eating green Jelly Beans and drinking Drano. If I can help you, let me know. I’m always in demand.
Did you grab my picture off my Facebook Profile?
@imsighked2 Yes. It took me a while to come across the exact representation or image I was seeking that would really hammer home my point. While I’m still unaware of what possible point I might have witlessly been considering, I did know almost immediately that I’d hit the jackpot upon my first look-see at your appalling yet morbidly objectionable facial orbit. I’ve never been so stricken by the sight of anyone’s face as I was and still am of yours. It is unlike anything I’ve ever seen or desire to ever see again. Other than that, it’s a pleasant face.

I spent few money in buying books, software during my high school to uni life that was 15 years ago, that may cost about 50$ however I got money by playing professional chess, that was about $1000-$1500 during 3 years period.(In 15 years ago in third world country, $30 is enough for a decent meal for one month for a uni student). I am a self taught ex-professional chess player.

i spend a lot on chess last year alone
~50$ at chessable.com
5$ mouthy for icc, 30$ yearly for chesstempo.com,15$ yearly for .365chess.com,i don’t remember how much i paid for chessgames.com but shouldn’t be more 15$ yearly, of course chess.com platinum membership 50$..books and vids i usually steal form the torrent sits lol
and my biggest expense is a privet lesson with a GM, 40$ for an hour lesson…i took about 20 lessons, so …something like 800$ for the lessons
i can’t afford the lesson any more(i’m a student and i don’t have a job) but i can recommend the the coach, GM Michael Roiz https://www.chess.com/member/michaelroiz
he’s a great coach and great person.. i truly recommend him to anyone how want to get better(my OBT rating increase by 300 points ,from 1600 to 1900 since i met him last year )
Travel tournaments probably average $900 each once you factor in entry fee/travel/hotel(I go on one long distance long tournament most years-Chicago Open, World Open, US Open, National Open, etc), regional weekend tournaments are about $225(ave 5/yr probably over course of my chess life), club tournaments are cheap($50 all year or less), chess.com diamond, 400 chess books, prior ICC membership, NIC magazine, national membership, handful of boards/pieces/carrying cases over the years, brief period of live lessons, few videos:
I'd guess about $40,000-$50,000(and $60,000 wouldn't surprise me) in the last 30 years

Hotel and travel should be free.
the airlines and the hotel industry does not agree; sadly, they insist on charging us. so do the gas stations.

If you live in the US and regularly play in weekend tournaments for 30+ years, $40,000 is fairly conservative. Smallish numbers($225/tournament) spent repeatedly over time add up.
I'd wager many people who have been playing that long have spent that much, but would estimate much lower. Hotels and entry fee and travel are not free.

I'm probably around $100 in site memberships, coaching, videos so far this year. That's like $25/ month and chess has entertained me for many hours. I find it to be a very affordable hobby, but it can add up. Especially with coaching and tournament expenses. I have not ever played in tournaments, but the expenses if you don't live in an area offering regular tournaments would add up quickly.

I’ve spent nothing on chess online, but books and computer programs have cost a little. Picture any other pastime (going to bars, movies, gambling, skiing, riding horses, golf...etc) everything is much more expensive than chess. I consider any money spent on chess as negligible UNLESS you want to keep a breakneck schedule of regional Tournaments. THEN, you must factor in costs.
