How much smarter are chess players than the average human?

Sorry for the long title. I guessing that its probably known that chess players are smarter than the average human. I'm wondering, how much smarter? Lets take IQ as the parameter for intelligence. I know I'm gonna get chewed up for this, but at least IQ is a starting point. Like I said before, I'm new to chess. One of the reasons I started playing is because I was unsatisfied with my IQ score. I thought it would be a lot higher. I guess what I'm wondering is even if I don't become a GM, but just play chess regularly, how much can I except my IQ to rise?

The thread is now open to discussion.

"Chess player" and "average human" are broad brushes with which to paint any picture with clarity, I would think.

Could you elaborate on this please?

Well, ok then, as long as your, in your words, "guessing".  You know, instead of googling.  If you had tried to find objective data, as opposed to random people's opinions, you would see that the most recent thing is that some folks at U. Mich did a meta-analysis, which is supposed to be a scientific look at multiple studies, aggregating the data into something reliable.  If they did it right, it should include a summary of what is out there on this issue.  At this point, I haven't actually seen a link to the actual meta-analysis itself, and the summaries are so general as to be useless.  But if you really want to dig in, you need to hunt around for the full text of the meta-analysis.  Here is  a reference to it to get you started.  https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/09/160913124722.htm

Does chess make a person smarter or are smarter people drawn to chess?

The problem with the "data" I find is that it's hard to understand sometimes. They use scientific terms and math I'm not familiar with. It's a lot easier for me to ask someone who can understand the data, and then whatever they tell me will help me formulate my own opinion. Thanks for the response though.

Chess players are not any smarter than non-chess playing humans.  Just look at these forums.

And thanks for the link. But I tend to avoid clicking on links on forum websites. I had to get my computer reprogrammed last week because of a virus. I'm not saying its a virus, I'm just trying to be careful.

I disagree, in my experience people have generally been helpful, and tend to provide insightful answers to my questions. Sometimes things get off-topic, this one time I had a guy talking about classical music. But for the most part, the contributors are insightful and intelligent.

Please explain what about the question is considered a troll... Please if you're throw around these rude, meaningless comments, just don't comment at all. If you don't feel the need to contribute anything insightful, don't contribute at all.

Huh?

Intelligence is something you can optimize so knowing that I think a lot of the people play chess to stay sharp. That's why I play, I don't really think im smarter than the average since I've never been tested, I also suck a chess, so go figure tongue.png

people who play chess tend to be really pretentious also

"People who play chess tend to be really pretentious also". Good enough, we'll use that as the consensus for this thread.
