How safe is it to go to tournaments right now?

hummm you really made me smile by your wise comment.

" FCPS currently has protocols in place to address communicable respiratory illness, such as influenza. As with any respiratory illness, protocols address good respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene: covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands frequently, staying home when sick and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces."
Yes, but with what exactly ?
Alcohol or bleach.

Safer than usual as some of the strongest players will no doubt avoid playing thus giving lower ratings better chances of taking a prize.

I think that it is safe right now unless you live in an area close to a reported case. However, it may not be safe within a month or two.

Hvivo are looking for volunteers to be infected with a strain COVID-19 in an effort to develop an effective vaccine.
Those who put themselves forward can reportedly earn a whopping £3,500 (€4,046) but they will also have to spend two weeks in quarantine and have no contact with the outside world.
I just saw the tail end of a Michigan State-Ohio State basketball game that had to have been attended by at least 5,000 people. Also, the sweaty ball players were hugging teammates and rivals after the game. Fans were high fiving and shaking hands with one another. Were they not worried about catching something or were they just being stupid? Also, I saw a news item about an early NCAA basketball game that did not let fans in to watch the game (I forget who the teams were, sorry). Only the players, coaches and game officials were allowed in. Last week, the Westfield, NJ Chess Club (a weekly tournament Chess group, actually) had 84 people in 21 quads. Today I was told that at least 40 were there to play. Anyway, my club, the West Orange, NJ CC is going to start this Tuesday evening a procedure of spray disinfecting and the wiping down of tables, folding chairs, boards and pieces in an effort to keep as clean as possible. What more can be done other than not shaking hands and using latex gloves? Bottom line: Other than staying home, our place should be as clean as can be. We will continue this practice even after the "virus scare" dies down as good hygiene will also help prevent catching the flu and the common cold.
