How should chess be studied?

I love this game, but I'm really bad right now: I need to improve. As I discovered the world of chess, I realized how studying was important: winning against strong players without any theoretical base is impossible.

So my question is: how should chess be studied? I mean litterary. What are the main topics to know in order if i want tounderstand this game? What are the books? (I cannot pay a master, I don't have enough money....)

I would be really happy if you answered me :)

Well, I looked at your stats and observed you are around 1000. Probably at this stage you should just play and work at tactics. After you have absorbed more tactical patterns and gotten over frequently overlooking one and two move tactics your rating will improve. When you get to around 1300 you probably should start learning strategy and endgames from books. I highly recommend Chernev's book Capablanca's best chess endings. Generally I think developing players can learn better from games of Capablanca and Rubinstein than other greats of the past. Their style emphasized clarity and simplicity. They had a knack of finding and flawlessly executing plans that were simple and easy to understand, but devastatingly effective.

I agree with patzermike. Tactics is the first step. Get a good book and practice a lot of problems to get used to common paterns (pin, fork, etc ..). Practice, practice and practice.

When you can play most of your games without ovbious blunders, then start with openings, endings and strategy.

I too agree with patzermike's advice. Have a look at my study plan if you want; hopefully there is something you can use.

Good luck.

Off the top of my head, openings, endgames, strategy, and tactics are the general categories.

To add to this, an important book type is an annotated game collection which is a little bit of everything.

Players also try to improve their ability to visualize and analyze. Mostly by playing long games as much as possible.

Seirawan's Winning Chess series is excellent.
