Join a local chess club, after that it's plain sailing. You'll meet people "in the scene", who can give you solid, local advice.

I wasn't sure which forum to post this in for sure, so I'll just put it here.
I'd like to get involved a bit in local chess tournaments and receive an actual rating for them, I'm not sure which organization is preferable or where at all to start.
If I should move this to a different forum, please do let me know, otherwise, I'd love get all the advice I could for how to officially start in the chess world.
