How should I study?

Sort:
PAWNACONDA

Ok so I have 3 chess books I'm studying but I was wondering should I go through them by reading from chapter to chapter like a normal book? Or slowly and stay on the chapter until I've memorized the ideas in each chapter? Feedback will be greatly appreciated thankssss~Pawnaconda

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus ...

Thanks :) but which method should I choose?

Just read the damn book.  Chapter to chapter as normally the writer builds on previous examples.  You will learn more reading those books than askying about how you should study.

1st of all I'm not asking rude people,so gtfoh. I'm asking people that are intelligent enough to answer with respect.

Well said, sir! Do whatever you think will work best for you, I prefer watching game reviews by solid players on YT and using tactics trainer.

A method that i like is to read through the book quickly.  This will allow you to sublimily pick up information, then go back and reread the book slowly to absorb the information.

Chronology is overrated. I prefer a poststructuralist approach.

pawnaconda, as a very intelligent person (although I don't mean to boast) and as a multilingual person, who has read lots of books. I suggest that you read one chapter everyday and focus on it. Chess books are a real aid in improving your chess skills. But mostly, you should do tactics trainer everyday. That is my honest opinion.

Thank you kindly. :) ~Pawnaconda

A great book is Chess Training For Budding Champions by Jesper Hall.  It gives a guide for studying and lists books for future learning.

To study a book , you need to sit on a real board and focus.

You must reject what the author says and try to refute it(meaning do personal analysis). You will never make it , but you have to keep trying.

You must try to understand. If you try to memorise , you already do something wrong.

If you don't understand something stay on it as long as it takes.Hours , days, weeks , months. It is much more difficult than you think to start "thinking chess".Your brain needs to be trained. But if you pass every chapter without understanding then you practically do nothing.

This is why i prefer e-books.  I can add my own analysis, notes, thoughts, etc.  Its the same thing youre saying, but this way i have them added into the e-book where i can save them.

although this may sound sarcastic, this thread has been enlightening for me.  other forum posts have been advocating pain and suffering as the only way to learn?  like working on tactics 'till ur eyes bleed... locking urself in the basement and shunning family and friends for weeks at a time... staying up all night pouring over ancient volumes of forgotten lore... that kinda thing?  i feel much better about chess after hearing about this more sensible approach... thank you

read it with your board

If youre one of those "gifted" types then yes you do need to do the pain and suffering thing, but for the rest of us 99%ers casual non painful study is fine.
