It’s interesting that you all are talking about your struggle with real life rated players in comparison to the chess master high rated players.

I would use Chessmaster as my sole training for chess for many years. I attained a rank of around 2,300 on Chessmaster, beating a few 2,400 rated players, never beating Chessmaster or really any of the Grandmasters. I think I may have beat one player rated 2,600 and above in the game.

Online play, I’d hover around 2,200 when playing well and 1,900 when playing not so well.

In person matches and tournaments, I would almost never lose. Unfortunately, I quit playing chess for several years.

I remember I almost win in certain type of opening in chessmaster 8000., ( it was about 15 years ago in Pentium 3 or 4).

When I play as white on d4/e4, CM has only 4 repertorie , One of his black opening repertorie was quite weak.So I have about 25% win as playing white.( other opening= unpredictable)

About the ratings .. I can say this .on the making of cm8k they did a tournament of rated players vs various cm engines in order to give as accurate as possible ratings for personalities ..the tournaments were played 5 inc 10   I believe 5 or 6 unknown personalities were played and after they did this they took these new "uscf rated" personalities  and play them vs others and gave ratings accordingly .

What is that?

So SSDF (remember them?) gives "Chessmaster King" (that would be the premiere program in Chessmaster 10) a rating of 2862 on a Q6600 2.4 GHz. That would be almost 600 pts below Stockfish 8 on the list, the highest rated program. Komodo 9.1 at 3353 is highest rated on the same hardware.

Here's the "trick" - Every engine is weak and play unbalanced game at lower levels; for example, lower rated player, let's say 1600, will manage to beat engine up to 2000-2200, sometimes even higher, however we can't say 2700 engine game is out of balance vs 2700 rated grand master; the engine at that level plays (almost) the best moves and doesn't make intentional mistakes for the purpose to mimicking lower level, which we know it's not natural for human to do and it's not how humans play. So, if Chessmaster 9000 defeated gm. Larry Christiansen with 2½–1½, then believe Chessmaster 9000 is simply better player than Larry. Shessmaster 9000 is about 28??-2900 computer elo, but according to SSDF Chessmaster 9000 had (an estimated) rating of 2720 (human) elo, and Christiansen is 2600+-, so the result above was totally expected. Conclusion: engines on level below 2300-2400-2500 play "funny", but as their rating is quickly approaching to gm level the gap between their elo and human elo becomes insignificant. One more thing; playing chess online against human opponents will never give you accurate, real life, elo... for the "reasons".

I just drew a game playing as Black against Petrosian. I doubt I would have gotten away with it against the real Petrosian. A draw by three-fold repetition after 29 moves. Lol.
