I don't believe anybody could have become WC if they started young enough: but I could have.

As you will understand that in the opening a move like Dd1-e2 by white is a centralizing move and Dd1-h5 an attacking move, but not centralizing, you start to understand the essence of the game of chess.

If white plays Dd1-h5, in that case is the D far from home; so he cannot defend his home anymore by one move: he will need two moves for it to come back and defend.

The gap, caused by the attacking move Dh5, may give black the opportunity to invade the white position, because an important defender is far from home.

But Black may only invade the white position, if he has the upperhand; and white only may play an attacking move as Dh5 if white has the upperhand.

That's the essence of the idea of centralizing by Nimzowitsch.

well i think your logic is a bit flawed, why would white need to defend?

When a bad player stops the master continues. If you aren't constantely challenging yourself you won't grow. This is the "secret" of the universe, The rings in a three you can see its age because it grows. When it stops growing it dies.

hahaha you are a complete loser. Now you 're trolling me cause you can't answer to the subject.Yeah Greece does not have world champions...but let me remember. There was a Russian,a Norwean,an Indian and an American??

So its not just Greece.Although Greece has offered and still offers much more from great minds than a WC at chess ;)

alexandros58

Also I want to add 2 facts.1) Chess is not a famous sport here in Greece. In the 15th century that chess was spread in Europe Greece was under the Ottoman command??(dont know the exact word),

2)Compare the population of Greece with India,America and Russia...

tubender...why you quoted my post?

TetsuoShima

Greece and turks i will never understand. They both eat yogurt and eat goat milk. They both eat meat from a turning grill.... one drinks uzo the other raki and i honestly cant taste the difference between those too.

MahadevSiva

Have not happened yet...it will happen.

Ok lets say that the WC and the 50 best players are exceptional and its a born talent which allows them go a step further...that doesnt mean that everybody else can't become great at chess..

GenghisCant

People who think you have to be born great should do a bit of reading on Laszlo Polgar. All three of the Polgar sisters are extremely strong players. Two GMs and an IM out of 3 kids seems to be proof that being great at chess can be taught. It's unlikely that all three of them are genius, in fact, with Sofia only being an IM, despite having the same tuition as the others, I'd say that probably shows she isn't.

Don't get me wrong, I do think that the very top players in history probably have that litte something extra. Carlsen, for example. I don't think he is simply a guy who worked hard.

I think we are talking about nature + nurture to be up there with the best of the best, not one or the other. To become a titled player in general? I think a reasonable level of intelligence and hard work will make it possible.
