First decide what sort of position you feel most comfortable in. At our level, the only valid task in the opening is to reach a middle-game position in which you feel comfortable and confident. I feel most comfortable in semi-open positions without locked center Pawns, so I play the Sicilian as Black and avoid those variations of it that lead to central Pawn rams (such as the 6. ... e5 Najdorf and the Svechnikov).
