Advice from Magnus Carlsen himself:

5 best tips for chess beginners:

1) Play as much chess as possible!

2) Read! (books, also videos on the internet, ... read about chess)

3) Learn the basic mating techniques (mate with two rooks, mate with the queen, ...) ...gives you a lot of confidence about being able to finish off your games

4) Learn from the old masters (very useful and very interesting) ... especially the games since the Capablanca-Alekhine World Championship match

5) Have fun!! If you do what is most fun to you (playing long games / reading about chess / solving exercises, ...) you will come a long way.
