Sorry about the off topic question, but I was wondering what the proper pronunciation for the word fide is. Does it rhyme with laundry detergent, or sound like fee day? Pretty sure I've heard both.

Pretty sure it comes from French so it is said in Spanish.

It's pronounced EYE-dee. The F is silent.

Good tips, Cherub_Enjel.

LOLOLOL.

Faidey sounds so FUNNNY.

Put FIDE on google traductor in Spanish and listen to that. That is how it is said.

You can also put it in French and listen to that, but the women has a weird tone to it and does not pronounce the e.

What a lively debate going on here^. Indeed, having settled how to destroy FMs easily, the most important step now is learning to pronounce "FIDE Master".

BronsteinPawn

Wasnt expecting to see this trolling skillzz.

Cherub_Enjel

Trolling? Well I'm certainly trolling the FMs, who don't stand a chance now that the secret is out.

BronsteinPawn

I agree. FMs are lost now.

EYE-dee mah-STEER

Debate resolved.

Rogue_King

This feels like a 2q1c post somehow.

Maybe it's the part about destroying FIDE masters easily?

Cherub_Enjel

My professional advice to Rogue_King would be to never become an FM. It's too dangerous now.

Recently, I played an FM in both daily chess and daily 960, and I won both games. Since I had a few hundred games at once, I probably didn't spend more than 10 minutes of thinking time on either game in total.

The master I played was ranked #1 globally on chess.com for daily 960 at the time. That's right, I beat the online chess960 world champion! Looks like it's time I set my goals a bit higher.

I realized that every player will play their first master at some point, so here are some tips for you to beat them easily when you do!

(1) Don't be afraid. Masters aren't very good. They're just good at playing intimidating-looking moves. You have to believe in yourself.

(2) Never resign. Even if you're down 3 queens, don't give up. You can't win/draw if you don't try!

(3) Play the board, not the rating. If you play the rating, you'll play defensively and lose. On the contrary, you should not thinking about your opponent's rating.

(4) If you want an illogical result (winning against a stronger player) you can't play logically. You need to be brave and create complications!

(5) Don't respect your opponent. Your goal in the game should be to show the master he/she has no clue about chess. If this isn't clear when you win, make sure to say it in the chat. This will pave the way for future victories, as the master will be scared of you.

Hope this helps! Now enjoy the games, and hopefully you'll be crushing masters like they're nothing in no time.

But seriously, I actually couldn't come up with 5 "troll" tips, so I actually gave 2 tips that were for real, and that I believe in. It should be obvious which 2 they are. My only victories against NMs/FMs on this site are from bullet/blitz,  and one other daily game where my FM opponent resigned after dropping a pawn on move 10. Hardly inspiring though. Yes, I was losing in the daily game , and I doubt he tried too hard in the 960 game since it was unrated.

Good luck with the scalps everyone!

Apparently no one has noticed yet.

Bonsai_Dragon

Cherub, your method involves too much work, personally I just slip them a mickey, few last till the end game.

Cherub: There's a better way that works against IMs, GMs, and even Magnus:

1) Start game

2) Become staff

3) Ban opponent

4) Win game

5) Start thread calling yourself a future world champion and the greatest slayer of titled players who ever lived.  Brag endlessly about your natural talent and be sure to stress that you are relatively new to chess.  Accuse detractors of homophobia and jealousy.  Be sure to stress that a win on time or by default is "still a win".  Demand that these bigots show you their wins over titled players.  Begin planning world championship coronation.

Cherub_Enjel

Interesting suggestions. I'm delighted to have spurred on such creative thought on how to brutalize FMs in the royal game.
