How to get a certain flagged FIDE ID?

I'm not sure if I've phrased the title correctly using the word "flagged", but what I mean is, certain FIDE chess players have a flag on their FIDE profile, and some just have "FIDE". How do you get a certain flagged FIDE ID, and does it have to do with your birth-place, where you live, where you play chess, your heritage?

I may have gotten all of this completely wrong and this entire thing may make no sense, but I hope I can get my question across.

Thanks in advance.

In general, you have to have the flag of your associated national federation. In some instances, a player can petition FIDE to not play under that flag, without changing their associated federation.

Alright, thanks for that info, but how exactly does a national federation work? I mean, how would you exactly approach a certain national federation to get associated to them?

It depends on your federation.

For example, I live in the US and am a US citizen. US Chess of the national federation and a member of FIDE.

If I play a dual rated event, one that is both US Chess and FIDE rated, I'll get a FIDE ID number (FIN) and my flag will be the US flag. I could also travel and play in a FIDE only tournament instead, but would need to contact US Chess in advance to get assigned a FIN if I didn't already have one.

Other countries have different requirements and some may not hold anything other than FIDE events, but it's up to them to handle the registration of FIDE IDs for their associated players.

Another option is to play on the official FIDE Online Arena, but I don't know much about that.

Assuming your flag is correct and you're a Polish citizen, you would work through http://www.pzszach.pl/

Donate a few hundred dollars to them.

If you want to get the FIDE flag in your profile, just subscribe to the Russian Chess Federation, or any other Federation that is sanctioned/suspended by FIDE.

Hey pfren, I do not want the FIDE flag on my profile, I'd want the Polish flag on my profile... problem is, I've never actually set foot in Poland, my dad has. I live abroad in an island called Cyprus, you've most likely heard of it, assuming from your Greece flag.

I've been in Cyprus last year and played at an open tournament there.

You can get a FIDE id in two ways:

1. Contact the Polish Chess Federation and apply for a national id. They may decline this if you are not a member of a Polish chess club.

2. Subscribe to a Cypriot chess club, and play in a couple of FIDE rated tournaments in Cyprus. The guys from the club will be able to help getting a FIDE id, even after playing these tournaments. And in any case, you cannot get a FIDE id if you don't play in a few FIDE rated tournaments.

I suggest you contact mr. Pambos Zacharoplastis, president of the Strovolos chess club in Nicosia and get some help from him. I don't think he will object if I share his mobile phone number here (99625471).

Hey pfren! Thanks for the help, is there any way I could transfer my FIDE ID and have it flagged Polish in the future if I were to choose the latter option?

With the latter option, you can still get only an id as Polish, unless you do have a double citizenship.

The idea is playing a couple of tournaments, and the organizer (likely Pambos) contact the Polish Chess federation and ask them to issue a Polish federation id for you. After getting that id it is easy to get a FIDE id, actually you don't have to do anything yourself.

I have no idea if the Polish Chess Federation is requiring the players paying an annual fee, you must ask for this.
