You get a FIDE rating by playing in over the board tournaments that are FIDE rated. This means face to face with your opponent, not online games. During the tournament you have to score something like at least 2 points. Wins are 1 point. Draws are 1/2 point.

Most tournaments in the US are USCF rated (United States Chess Federation). Most tournaments are not FIDE rated, but some are FIDE rated. You can probably find at least a few FIDE rated tournaments a year in California (if not a lot more). It's not that FIDE tournaments are harder or easier, mostly it means your local organization has to find a certified FIDE arbiter.

In any case, membership and tournament entry fees cost money. You'll also have to travel and sometimes stay in a hotel if the tournament lasts multiple days... so if you want to play over the board chess (which is the only way to be FIDE rated) you'll have to get your parents involved. You should start by talking to them.

I would also suggest that you should first focus on getting your rating high in online chess because you otp rating will always be a bit less. If you go to a tournament today and get a rating of 1000, it will take you years to get your rating high because even top grandmasters get around 10 to 20 points in one tournament or if they are giving a perfect performance, maybe 50-60 points. So you can go to a tournament but I will suggest you to get really good only and start playing a FIDE tournament with high rated players so you can get a high rating initially so you don’t have to grind a lot of tournament. Again, this is as per my research and I am not the best person to give advise but probably a higher rated player can correct me if I am wrong.

The games played in over the board tournaments are better learning experiences. If you want to get good quickly then ideally there is a club near you where you can play every weekend or at least a few times a month. Of course playing online can help too, but for example when Carlsen was young his parents took him out of school and they traveled around Europe playing in chess tournaments. This gave Carlsen a lot of good experience.

Of course you don't have to quit school to be a grandmaster happy.png but online games are mostly casual and not as useful for improvement when your goal is a FIDE title.

As said, you just need to play in a FIDE rated tourney. One option is to play on their online offering. The other is to play a FIDE rated event; some of the following sections of this event are FIDE and US Chess rated: https://new.uschess.org/southern-california-open

You should get an ID just by scoring in the event, as long as you play at least one player with an established FIDE rating.

What if they ask for my fide id and I don't have one? What do I do?

Organizers like new people. They will not try to make you go away happy.png

When a totally new person goes to a chess tournament, they are given the opportunity to sign up to whatever organization they need to be a part of (USCF membership) and then allowed to enter the tournament.

Membership fees + tournament fees cost money of course... so again, you should talk to your parents. They can e-mail tournament organizers in advance to make sure you'll have everything you need... but honestly you don't need to worry about it. Like I said organizers try to accept everyone who wants to play happy.png

Yes you must be a member of the USCF to participate in USCF rated events, which some top levels are also FIDE rated. Entry fees can be high in larger events that award sizable cash prizes; I highly recommend you avoid those initially and instead participate in some smaller events that offer little cash prizes but likewise have much smaller entry fees; in my area these small events (often less than 20 players here) and either $5-$30 entry fee; a few are even free, but they are aimed at scholastic players below 1200 USCF.

how much is uscf for a kid?

Jordan2177

and is uscf fide?

Jordan2177

and what if i dont do ucsf and i do fide instead, is that ok?

You need to go to uschess.org and look this information up. You can’t join FIDE without joining your national chess federation, aside from some exceptions that I’m aware of. Joining USCF will noble you to participate in USCF events, which is what you need to focus on. FIDE rating will happen when you play in higher sections of USCF events. You can find the fees for USCF memberships at uschess.org. Please visit there for all the information you need, including USCF events and clubs in your area.

No. You get a FIDE ID after you play in a FIDE rated event and score at least 1/2 a point. Though that may require playing at least one player with an established FIDE rating, though I'm not certain on that.

I got my ID by playing a round in a FIDE rated blitz tourney.

However, you do not need to worry about getting a FIDE ID. It will be automatically handle if you meet the requirements when you play an event in the US. The only time you need to worry is if you are going to another country to play an event; then you'll need to have the ID already.

Having an ID does not provide any benefits.

You can also get an ID by playing in their online server, but that also costs money, and again, doesn't really provide any benefit other than being able to get an Online FIDE rating.
